This month’s guest speaker is Valerie “Val” Uschock LCAT, MT-BC.
Val is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, Board Certified Music Therapist, and Hospice & Palliative Care Music Therapist with 30 years of experience. She has worked with patients ranging in age from 1 to 102 years over a wide variety of diagnoses and clinical settings including hospitals, schools, day programs, groups homes, and private practice. Val has specialized in Neurologic Disorders, Autism Spectrum, Dementia Care, and End of Life Care. She is currently the Music Therapist at VITAS Healthcare’s Pittsburgh Program which provides hospice services to Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. To help her patients maximize quality of life, Val implements various music therapy interventions to alleviate pain, anxiety, depression, grief, sensory deprivation, and social isolation. Our guest speaker this month is Dr David Clippinger. He will be discussing how T’ai Chi can be beneficial to stroke recovery and for caregivers as well.
Dr. David Clippinger, the Director of Still Mountain T’ai Chi and Qigong, is a recognized T’ai Chi and Qigong Master, author of books and articles, and an expert on the Therapeutic aspects of T’ai Chi, Qigong, and Meditation. A master teacher and scholar, who has trained with some of the most renowned T’ai Chi masters in the world. Dr. Clippinger has had a studio in Pittsburgh for 25 years and has extensive training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Buddhism, and Taoism. He is dedicated to working with families experiencing disability and long-term illnesses as he has both personal and professional experience in these areas. As part of his therapeutic practice, he works with people who have experienced a life-changing disability or long-term illness, and their families adjust to new roles and expectations. He also helps them manage the strong emotions and sense of loss that individuals and families can feel around these events. Dr. Sager is currently seeing clients at Avellar Warden Psychological Associates.

Goal Setting Activity will be presented by St Clair Health’s Stroke Coordinator, Beth DeRunk, BSN, RN.

Yogic Breathing information by Sudha Krishnasamy MS, MBA, a recent stroke survivor, entrepreneur, 25+years of software engineer and manager with 12+ years of yoga practitioner will walk us through her recovery and teach a short introduction course for people with ailments like her. She will be sharing her life changing experience of Yoga journey before and after stroke. She is a student of Sri. S.Sridharan.
Sri. S.Sridharan is Therapist, Advisor and Senior Mentor at Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, India. He is a student of Sri. T.K.V. Desikachar under whom he learnt nuances of yoga for fitness, healing and well-being. For over 4 decades, he has been practicing and teaching the application of yoga as therapy and managing illness through asana, pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditative practices. He serves in the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy and Yoga Certification board, setup by Govt. of India. He is also vice-president, executive council of Indian Yoga Association.
