St. Clair Health Continues Leading The Way, Earns 19th Consecutive ‘A’ Hospital Safety Rating From The Leapfrog Group
‘Expert care from people who care’ positions St. Clair as a national leader in patient safety—and the only one in PA to benchmark sustained level of excellence
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (November 10, 2021) – For the 19th consecutive period, the nation’s
leading patient safety watchdog, The LeapFrog Group, has awarded St. Clair Health an “A”
Hospital Safety Grade for achieving the highest national standards in patient safety.
St. Clair is one of only 34 hospitals across the country to have earned 19 “As” in a row—and the only hospital in Pennsylvania to do so. This prestigious honor places St. Clair amongst the top 1.2 percent of hospitals in the country and distinguishes St. Clair as the region’s leader for patient safety.
The Leapfrog Group assigns an A, B, C,D or F grade to all general hospitals across the country. This grade, developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, uses over 30 measures of safety data including rates of preventable errors, injuries and infections, while also accounting for whether hospitals have systems in place to protect patients from harm.
“We take great pride in providing the highest level of patient safety,” said Todd Pollock, Executive Director of Quality and Care Management at St. Clair Health. “Achieving this level of measurable recognition is a testament to the relentless effort of every single member of our care teams. The LeapFrog Group continues to raise the bar, and St. Clair continues to rise to the challenge of leading the region.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“St. Clair Health has made a clear and consistent effort to protect patients from harm,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Establishing and maintaining systems that optimize patient safety is especially critical during times of crisis. I am grateful to the leadership and workforce of St. Clair for their unwavering dedication to protecting patients.”
Today’s announcement continues a tradition of excellence that is unsurpassed in western Pennsylvania. In addition to The Leapfrog Group, St. Clair was recognized among the 100 Top Hospitals for the fourth consecutive year in 2021—the sixth time since 2012 that St. Clair has received this honor and the seventh overall, which is also the most in western Pennsylvania.
