Self-care options include regular exercise and adequate sleep. Avoiding or limiting alcohol consumption also may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

Seek emergency help if:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Chance of harming oneself or others

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, such as feeling sad, empty, hopeless, or tearful
  • Affecting work, school, and relationships
  • Persistent, elevated mood lasting longer than a few days
  • Excessive risk-taking
