Self-care

Self-care options include gentle stretching, massage, and icing muscles after exercise. Over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) can help, too.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Chest pain during or after exercise
  • Possible broken bone
  • Joint appears out of position
  • Pop or snapping sound occurs

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • No improvement with self-care steps
  • Persistent or severe
