Repeat test to confirm blood sugar results. If prescribed insulin or diabetes medications, take as directed by doctor. Regular activity can help lower blood sugar.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Blood sugar persistently above 240 milligrams per deciliter (13.3 millimoles per liter), and ketones present in urine
  • Fruity-smelling breath
  • Belly pain or vomiting
  • Diabetes medications don't bring blood sugar levels down
  • Confused

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Difficulty maintaining normal blood sugar levels
  • Persistent blurred vision
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent headaches
