Self-care

Rest, and avoid running, standing for a long time, or walking on hard surfaces. Apply ice for up to 20 minutes, three times a day. Try over-the-counter heel cups or wedges in shoes.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Severe pain and swelling
  • Caused by injury
  • Unable to flex or bend foot downward
  • Unable to walk comfortably
  • Fever associated with numbness or tingling in heel

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Painful at rest
  • Persists or worsens over a few weeks or more despite home care
  • Limits ability to work or do daily tasks
