Leg pain

Self-care

Rest and elevate leg when possible. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve), can help ease pain.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Sudden, severe pain
  • Unable to walk or bear weight
  • Redness, warmth, or fever
  • Cool temperature, pale skin, and trouble finding pulse
  • Focused on an area of the back of the lower leg

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Swelling in both legs
  • Pain worsens
  • No improvement with home care
  • Occurs during or after walking
  • Limits ability to work, sleep, or complete daily tasks
