Self-care

Self-care options include a heating pad or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve, others).

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Heavy bleeding, soaking through one pad or tampon every hour or two
  • Bleeding pattern changes

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Older than 25 and menstrual cramping is new
  • More severe than usual
  • Interferes with work or other tasks
