Swollen lymph nodes

Self-care

Rest, and apply a warm, moist compress to the swollen area. Over-the-counter pain medications also may provide relief, but don't give aspirin to children.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Sore throat or difficulty swallowing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Redness or pain in the area of the lymph nodes

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • No apparent cause
  • Enlarging and painful
  • Present for two to four weeks
  • Feel hard or rubbery, or seem fixed to the skin
  • Persistent fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss
