Self-care

Over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen, naproxen sodium, or ibuprofen may help. For injury pain, self-treatment also includes rest, ice, and elevating the injured area.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Dizziness, trouble breathing, high fever
  • Sudden swelling of painful area
  • Unable to move painful area

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Persistent swelling or redness
  • Can't sleep or complete daily tasks
  • Affects mood
