Weight gain

Adding pounds to the body, usually either from eating too much, not moving enough or both.


Self-care options include eating fewer calories, making healthy food choices, getting more exercise and keeping track of weight.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a doctor if:

  • A serious health issue related to weight, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea.
  • Continuing to gain weight even with lowering calories and exercising more.
