Myocardial infarction


A blockage of blood flow to the heart, also known as a heart attack.

Overview

Heart attack (myocardial infarction) usually occurs when a blood clot blocks blood flow to the heart. Without blood, tissue loses oxygen and dies. A heart attack is a medical emergency.

Symptoms

Symptoms include tightness or pain in the chest or arms, indigestion, and shortness of breath.

Treatments

Treatment ranges from medications to surgical procedures.
