Transitional Year

Mission

We are honored to guide transitional year residents in their first and formative post-graduate year. Our primary mission is to provide residents with a strong clinical foundation to better serve their patients, create pathways for future success in subspecialties for those with defined goals, and offer a robust clinical experience for undifferentiated residents. Additionally, we emphasize self-development, scholarly activity, and a deep understanding of our healthcare environment.

Specific Aims

1. To provide a foundation of knowledge and clinical experience in internal medicine that exceeds requirements for subsequent specialty training.

  • We follow a formal curriculum, designed by the internal medicine residency program director, as a basis for parallel independent study for the USMLE Step 3/COMLEX-USA Level 3 examination. Our goal is a 100% pass rate.
  • We provide a fundamental clinical skills (FCS) experience that aims to meet or exceed all subsequent specialty residency program requirements.

2. To provide pathways of electives that will enhance success of specialty residency programs.

    • We use specific pathways, or clinical tracks, designed to enhance preparation for subsequent specialty training.
      • 75% of transitional year residents report a “Somewhat Positive” or “Very Positive” overall satisfaction with their elective experience.

    3. To employ a year-long parallel track of study, an Introduction to Health Systems Science (IHSS), for the purpose of educating transitional year residents about quality, healthcare economics, healthcare law, and work culture, that they may better understand the healthcare environment in which they find themselves, and lead their future colleagues in improving healthcare delivery, for the good of all of those whom they will serve, and to maximize residents’ well-being and sense of agency.

      • 75% of transitional year residents report a “Somewhat Positive” or “Very Positive” overall satisfaction with the IHSS program.

      4. To coach residents through a guided self-actualization program that is integrated throughout PGY-1.

      • 100% of residents have formal coaching on case logging.
      • 100% of residents have formal coaching on goal setting.
      • 100% of residents participate in the Professional Growth and Satisfaction Plan program’s structured coaching sessions.
      • 100% of residents engage with “Mindful Monday” and “Feedback Friday” prompts to keep self-awareness and goal setting at the forefront.
