Escorting patients, assisting with clerical tasks, staffing the gift shop or greeting visitors is just a sampling of the wide range of activities performed by the dedicated volunteers of St. Clair Hospital. Committed to making the Hospital a better place, the volunteer organization is comprised of 435 senior and 150 junior volunteers. Their selfless dedication and ability to provide an extra “human touch” for patients and visitors is an essential component of St. Clair Hospital’s mission to serve others.
Annually, the Hospital’s team of volunteers contributes 90,000 hours of service – a value estimated at nearly $1 million.
Senior volunteers, those over the age of 18, serve the Hospital as a way to give back to the community. Junior volunteers are required to be a least 14 years of age. Representing 14 area school districts, many student volunteers are interested in pursuing a career in health care. St. Clair Hospital supports these goals and provides students with a number of unique opportunities, including the invitation to observe a surgical heart procedure and the chance to work in the Hospital’s Emergency Department during their senior year. Volunteers are required to purchase a uniform.
Whether you enjoy interacting with patients directly or prefer a non-clinical role, St. Clair Hospital has a variety of assignments available to fit each volunteer’s needs and interests. Some of the volunteer opportunities that are available for seniors and juniors include:
St. Clair Hospital volunteers serve as couriers by delivering and picking up mail throughout the Hospital.
Volunteers help with the Hospital’s Gift Shop and Cafe which serves patients, visitors and employees. Other opportunities include visiting patient rooms with a gift cart to serve patients or guests unable to visit the Gift Shop or Café.
Volunteers staff the Mt. Lebanon Surgical Center of St. Clair Hospital by serving as receptionists, greeting patients, obtaining insurance information and performing clerical duties.
St. Clair Hospital is a busy facility, with hundreds of patients receiving inpatient and outpatient care daily. Often, patients must leave their rooms for additional testing, and volunteers help by escorting patients to testing areas and assisting with patients being admitted or discharged.
Supportive Visitor volunteers enjoy visiting patients in their rooms and coordinate patient requests for clergy visitation.
Volunteers staff the outpatient surgery and post anesthesia care unit waiting rooms updating families on their loved ones’ progress. These volunteers also serve refreshments to waiting guests, as well as arrange for consultation with the physicians once surgical procedures have been completed.
Volunteers who enjoy welcoming and assisting others often choose to serve at St. Clair Hospital’s Welcome Centers (the Hospital’s information desks). These volunteers greet guests, provide directions within the Hospital, answer questions and deliver patient mail and flowers.
