The Family Birth Center Breakfast Tour
Schedule your tour of the Family Birth Center to orient to the birthing rooms at
St. Clair Hospital. A breakfast tour of the Family Birth Center is offered monthly for expectant parents, family members and friends. Enjoy breakfast, tour the unit, and ask questions about the family-centered services we provide at St. Clair Hospital. We remain committed to an environment that is secure, comfortable, and responsive to families. Breakfast and tours are held from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Baby Basics
The 4-hour Baby Basics class is designed to enable parents to confidently take care of their newborn. Topics of care include: diapering, bathing, cord care, care of the penis in the circumcised/uncircumcised newborn male, swaddling, recognizing warning signs of a sick baby, when to call the pediatrician, recognizing symptoms of jaundice, temperature taking, ways to console a fussy baby, safe sleep positions, preventing Shaken-Baby Syndrome, reducing the risk of SIDS, car seat safety, breast and bottle feeding, recognizing developmental milestones of the first year, normal newborn appearances, pet and baby safety, and poison prevention. Fetal effects from maternal smoking and the dangers of second-hand smoke on young children are addressed. While the class is structure, parents are encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussion. A majority of the content is taught through a hands-on approach. Parents practice bathing, diapering, cord-care, swaddling and car seat safety with newborn models.

Childbirth Preparation
The Childbirth Preparation course focuses on the birth experience. This comprehensive course includes the normal birth process, signs of labor, pain management techniques, paced breathing, relaxation techniques and exercise. Coaching and the role of the support person is highlighted.
Medications, anesthesia and C-section births are addressed. Expectant mothers and their coaches practice for labor and develop a personal list of birth wishes. All instructors are certified childbirth educators. Expectant parents should complete this course at least 3-4 weeks before their due date.

Introduction to Breastfeeding
The Breastfeeding Class is designed for expectant parents planning to nurse their newborn baby. The “Why To” and “How To” of breastfeeding are addressed through informal lecture, DVD presentations and open-floor discussions led by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Infant nutrition, breast care, breastfeeding challenges, the father’s role and returning to work are highlighted. The key outcome of the class is infant’s positioning, latching of the baby to the breast and feeding expectations in the early days. Participants will have the opportunity to view breast pumps, nursing bras and other breastfeeding accessories.

Family & Friends / Infant and Child CPR
The American Heart Association designed the Family and Friends program, a non-certification program, for anyone who wants to learn how to save the life of a loved one. This session is especially designed to meet the needs of new and expectant parents and families with infants and young children. Students will learn the signs and symptoms of life-threatening emergencies and practice appropriate actions. Students practice CPR skills and obstructed airway rescue for the infant, child and adult. Students will receive a Family and Friends information booklet and a participation card.

Grandparents' Class
Grandparents are invited to update themselves on the current changes in early child care. The Grandparents' Class focuses on the recommendations in infant and toddler safety, child car restraint regulations, and feeding in the first year. Prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and childproofing your home will be discussed. A question and answer session will provide an opportunity for your other questions and concerns to be addressed.

First Aid, Pediatric
The Pediatric First Aid course is designed for the individual who wants to prevent childhood injuries and provide appropriate skilled interventions when acute illness and accidents do happen. This course covers infant and child safety, first aid basics, medical emergencies, injuries, bites and stings, poisoning, drownings and temperature related emergencies. Pediatric First Aid is a hands-on class that will raise your confidence level when interacting with ill or injured infants and children. Class discussion and question and answer sessions enhance learning and skills. Active class participation enhances your ability to make a difference in the life of a child and even save the life of someone you know.

KidShape
If your child is overweight, we're here to help. St. Clair Hospital and Highmark Blue Shield are jointly sponsoring KidShape, a family-based weight management program for overweight children, 6 to 14 years of age. At KidShape, we offer a nine-week, fun-filled program that will start your child and your whole family on a lifetime of health and improved self-image. KidShape can help your child develop a healthy lifestyle. Nine-week programs are planned for the winter, spring and fall. For more information about KidShape, call 412-942-5882.

The Sibling Class
The Siblings Class is designed to help children, 3 – 7 years of age, welcome a new brother or sister to the family, while also learning about normal behaviors of the newborn baby. Children in the class watch the DVD “Sibling Silly” followed by discussion time. They learn that babies either drink breast milk or formula and foods that they eat are not right for their little brother or sister. They also learn why babies cry and identify safe toys for babies. Children practice the correct way to hold a baby and swaddling. With their “babies”, children are then taken to see a birthing room where Mommy and Daddy will be when the baby arrives. The class includes a project, story telling and visit to the Family Birth Center. Children are encouraged to ask questions. Children should bring a newborn or baby picture of themselves.

This program, designed for mothers and their 9 to 11 year old daughters, is a discussion on the physical and emotional changes that accompany the onset of puberty. Topics include the female anatomy, reproductive development, menstruation, skin care and healthy habits. The program focus is to stimulate further discussions between mothers and their daughters.

Mothers and Daughters - Healthy Body Image
Becoming a young woman often causes emotional ups and downs. You may be laughing one minute and crying the next! During puberty it is normal to experience very strong and volatile emotions. Growing up can be stressful. Taking care of your feelings is just as important as taking care of your changing body. This class focuses on recognizing and dealing appropriately with your changing emotions and learning effective communications with your friends, parents and other supportive adults. Mothers and Daughters: Healthy Body Image is a class created for pre-teen girls and their mothers.
Cost: $40 per child ($50 total per child when attending both Growing and Changing and Healthy Body Image classes)

Mothers and Daughters - Teenage Sexuality
Mothers and Daughters - Teenage Sexuality is designed to initiate dialogue between mothers and their pre-teen/teenage daughters. The program addresses issues on teenage sexuality, peer pressure, sexual myths, abstinence, decision-making and dating. Reproduction and reproductive health are reviewed. This program on teenage sexuality and responsibility is a positive experience for teenage girls, ages 12 -14.

Our Growing Sons
Our Growing Sons is designed for 10 to 13 year old boys and their parents. The course emphasizes the emotional and physical changes associated with puberty. Participants receive information on male anatomy, reproduction, communication, and healthy choices. Interactive activities stimulate discussion and promote understanding and coping with puberty. The focus is to stimulate further discussion between parents and sons.

Becoming a Smoke Free Family
The Center for Women and Children and the Center for Pulmonary Health are pleased to offer a smoking cessation program designed specifically for families. The program is geared for parents, caregivers of young children, pregnant women and women of childbearing age. This program is designed to teach the participant tobacco cessation skills while taking one through the quitting process. Information will also be available on the dangers of smoking for young women, pregnant women and the health effects of second hand smoke on young children. The program is offered either in a 4 session group format, or as individual counseling, and includes a pre-class interview and follow-up session. Pediatric Unit Tour
Cost: No Charge
The Pediatric Unit provides tours for young children to experience the hospital environment in a calm, non-threatening manner. The children see where they would stay in the hospital, examine equipment, and meet with pediatric nurses. Individual and group tours may be arranged.
Safe Sitter
Safe Sitter, a nationally-recognized program, teaches 11 to 13 year old boys and girls to provide safe childcare, as well as experience rewarding babysitting jobs. Safe Sitter participants become more confident baby sitters! The program teaches sitters to recognize medical emergencies and to respond with appropriate actions. Tips for injury prevention, behavior management, safety for the sitter and babysitting as a business are discussed. Basic age-appropriate child care is addressed, including nighttime and naptime, diapering and toileting, eating and activities. Students practice obstructed airway skills for the choking infant and child. Learning is enhanced through hands-on activities and interactive games. Each Safe Sitter participant receives a course completion card and a Safe Sitter Manual.

Family and Friends CPR - Youth Class
Participants can gain further confidence and skill in saving the life and preventing injury for the babies and children in their care. First Aid for Kids
This course is designed for boys and girls 8 to 11 years of age. Topics include burns, falls, poisonings, nose bleeds, mouth and eye injuries, bites, and scrapes, cuts and bleeding. Safety and injury prevention are stressed. Participants will learn to respond calmly and confidently during first aid emergencies. Call to arrange presentation dates for small groups. The cost is pro-rated per participant and course length.
Heartsaver CPR Certification - Middle and High School Students
The Heartsaver CPR course, certified through the American Heart Association, teaches both adult and pediatric lay rescuer skills. Participants learn information on heart attack, cardiac arrest and stroke in adult victims. Participants are presented information on prevention of sudden infant death syndrome and common injuries in infants and children. Student learn and practice resuscitation and obstructed airway rescue skills for the infant, child and adult. Use of the automated external defibrillator (AED) is reviewed. After correct demonstration of resuscitation and airway obstruction skills, participants receive a Heartsaver certification card. Each student receives a Heartsaver Student Workbook for ongoing reference.
Audience: Middle and High School Students
