G. Frederick Woelfel, MD Director, Cardiac Surgery

G Frederick Woelfel, M.D., St. Clair Hospital Heart Center director of cardiac surgery, was among the Western Pennsylvania surgeons having the lowest mortality rate for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in the state for 2003. At 226 procedures, Dr. Woelfel ranked second in the state for performing the highest number of open heart surgery procedures in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Woelfel graduated magna cum laude from Duke University. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree with honors from the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Woelfel served as a vascular surgery fellow and instructor in surgery at the University of Illinois Medical School. He served as a cardiothoracic surgery fellow and instructor in surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Board certified in general and thoracic surgery, Dr. Woelfel is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of various medical societies including the Three Rivers Cardiac Institute and the Society of Thoracic Surgery. He has authored and published numerous papers and presentations on cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Woelfel resides in Upper St. Clair with his wife, Karen and their children, Fritz and Stephanie.
