Drug Eluting Stent
A stent is a tiny metal "scaffold" that holds open a previously blocked coronary artery. Coated, or drug-eluting stents (DES), are the latest advancement in the treatment of coronary artery disease and we are pleased to provide this technology to our community. The new stent contains a drug called "Sirolimus" which impedes the growth of scar tissue that occurs after a stent is inserted into the coronary artery. The scar tissue growth is referred to as "in-stent restenosis". Drug eluting stents, the chance of restenosis is reduced from 25 percent to as little as 8 percent.

Not every patient is a candidate for drug eluting stents. Your cardiologist will be able to discuss the stent with you and provide you with specific information about your chance of needing a drug eluting stent. For more information on Drug Eluting Stents, please click the links below
