Welcome to the department of cardiovascular surgery. At The Heart Center at St. Clair, more than 1800 open-heart surgeries have been performed in our seven years of operation. One of the operations most frequently performed in our state-of-the-art facilities is coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The mortality rate at St. Clair Hospital for surgery of this type is 1.4%, well below the state average of 2.0%, as reported by the Pennsylvania Healthcare Cost Containment Council (PHC4). The Heart Center also has the lowest number of readmissions for complications among all the cardiac surgery programs in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Demonstrating our commitment to excellence in cardiac surgery, The Heart Center is one of the original members of the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative's (PRHI) Cardiac Working Group (CWG). The CWG has constructed the Cardiac Care Improvement Registry, a database containing detailed information about CABG surgery performed at area open heart programs. The information is reviewed by CWG cardiac experts with the goal of improving the quality of care provided to CABG patients.
