Radiation Therapy & Imaging Services

Radiation therapy is available on-site at St. Clair Hospital through a cooperative partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, enabling patients requiring radiation therapy to be treated without leaving the Hospital. Patients have access to:

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy
Provided by a linear accelerator, the machine produces a beam of rays that is directed to the tumor or the part of the body that is being treated.
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Gives the radiation oncologist the ability to target the treatment field by “sculpting” the contours of the irregular shaped tumor with an intensive dose of radiation. This minimizes the radiation damage to normal tissue, resulting in far fewer side effects.
  • 3D Conformal Therapy
Minimizes the potential damage to the healthy surrounding tissue by controlling the radiation beam which is directed toward the cancerous tissues in conformal shapes.
  • Low Dose Rate (LDR) Brachytherapy
Designed for patients with early stage prostate cancer, brachytherapy is a special type of radiation treatment that involves placing radioactive seeds into the prostate. The seeds are permanent and release radiation gradually over a period of months until inactive. Specific instructions and education are provided after the permanent radioactive implant.
  • PET/CT
A sophisticated camera that produces powerful images that can effectively pinpoint the source of many of the most common cancers and eliminate the need for redundant tests and diagnostic surgical procedures. PET/CT helps to diagnose cancer and guides physicians to the most beneficial therapies.
