Not all departments work the same hourly schedule. As the Hospital must provide service 24 hours a day, every day of the year, employees may be required to be on duty weekends, evenings, nights and holidays. Employees and managers are encouraged to maintain open lines of communication regarding all employment matters, especially scheduling. Employee needs with schedules are met in a variety of ways: 4-, 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-hour shifts may be worked depending on need and availability. In non-clinical areas (i.e., business office environments), start and end times are flexible, and where technology allows, telecommuting is possible. Additionally, many employees have an opportunity to work three 12-hour shifts (for a total of 36 hours) while maintaining full-time benefits, while others work four 10-hour days (for a total of 40 hours).
Full- and part-time employees are eligible upon hire for reimbursement of tuition related to their positions, or another position, within the Hospital. Reimbursement of 100 percent of tuition is made upon receipt of tuition request, receipts and grades. The maximum annual reimbursement is $2,000 for full-time employees and $1,000 for part-time employees.
Tuition Reduction Programs/On-Site Classes
St. Clair Hospital has worked diligently to negotiate discounted rates on tuition for its employees at numerous local colleges and universities. These discounts – which are offered by LaRoche College, Carlow University, Chatham College and Duquesne University – range from 20 percent to 50 percent off published tuition rates. Additionally, LaRoche College provides classes toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree on-site at St. Clair Hospital.
Employees and dependent members of their immediate family are eligible to receive the current self pay allowance on charges for services provided by the Hospital that are not covered under their health insurance. Deductibles, co-pays and co-insurances do not receive any discounts or allowances.
Employees may purchase over-the-counter medications in the Hospital pharmacy at wholesale prices. Employees may also make use of the Hospital's convenient on-site pharmacy to have their personal prescriptions filled.
Employee Assistance Program
St. Clair Hospital’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is provided free-of-charge to employees. Employees may meet with an EAP counselor for assistance with personal problems, including marital and family distress, alcohol and drug dependency, and financial difficulties.
An in-house credit union is available to employees of St. Clair Hospital for checking, savings, Christmas Club and loans.
Business Casual Dress
In areas that do not require health care-specific uniforms, St. Clair Hospital has adopted a business casual dress policy. The implementation of this policy has had a positive impact on employee morale.
Employee Flu Vaccine Program
Each year, employees are offered a free flu vaccine during the months of November through February. Last year, more than 1,000 employees participated in this program.
Legal Service Plan
All employees are eligible to participate in a legal service plan. This benefit provides access to an attorney 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as well as discounted legal services and several document preparation services free-of-charge. Payroll deduction is available for full- and part- time employees. Stand-by employees may also participate, but must pay premiums through direct debit of their bank accounts. Identity theft insurance is also available.
Long-Term Care Insurance
This AFLAC insurance program provides coverage of nursing home benefits, including care that is received in the home, or care that is provided via adult day care, an assisted living center or nursing home.
Free parking is available on a first come, first served basis in the open lot behind the Hospital’s parking garage. On-site parking is also available to employees at a cost of $1.50 per day. Employees with 15 years of service or more receive free parking privileges.
Personal Accident Insurance
Personal Accident Insurance, which is available through AFLAC, is designed to pay employees a benefit in the event that they have a non-work related accident. Specific sum benefits ranging from $25 to $10,000 are payable under the program for injuries sustained in a covered accident. An accident disability rider is also available.
Various forms of employee reward and recognition exist within St. Clair Hospital. Annually, employees are evaluated by their managers and are eligible to receive a general salary increase (if granted by the Board), advancement to the next pay step in the pay scale for their positions, or a cash bonus payment. Employees in the disciplinary process or who fail to meet performance expectations do not receive any form of monetary increase or award. Current St. Clair Hospital employees can click HERE to access the Performance Manager system.
Service Awards are also presented to full- and part-time employees for every five years of service at the annual Service Awards dinner. A gift card in various denominations is awarded based on years of service.
