Quality Care and Patient Safety Overview

Patient Safety

St. Clair Hospital is focused on providing the highest level of comfort and safety for our patients.

In addition to adopting national recommended policies on safety, St. Clair Hospital's dedication to its patients reaches further. The Hospital has developed and received national recognition for safety programs focused on patients' falls, safeguards for medication distribution and addressing medical concerns. All are designed to create the best care and patient experience possible.

St. Clair Hospital is the recipient of a 2010 HAP Achievement Award for the entry Improving Patient Safety through Standardization of Anticoagulation Processes.  The award reflects multidisciplinary team spirit, creativity and focus on safe patient care delivery. Medication Administration Advances

Barcode Point-of-Care Enhances Medication Administration

When it comes to medication administration, nurses at St. Clair Hospital offer their patients a higher level of safety, thanks to barcode point-of-care and radio frequency identification (RFID) on a single handheld device. To learn more about how wireless, handheld PDAs and barcodes help nurses with medication administration, click here. St. Clair Hospital's Innovation In Technology Advances Patient Care

St. Clair Hospital developed a high-tech software company that eventually was acquired by a multi-billion dollar global pharmaceutical and medication delivery company. Embracing technology to enhance patient care has been part of the Hospital's strategy for many years.

Fall Prevention

Low Beds Aid in Fall Prevention

St. Clair Hospital is enhancing its already successful Fall Prevention program by adding more "low beds" throughout the Hospital.

Thanks to St. Clair's comprehensive Fall Prevention program, the Hospital's patient fall rate is considerably lower at 1.99 patient falls per 1,000 patient days versus the national benchmark rate of 3.5 patient falls per 1,000 patient days. To learn more, click here.

VTE (venous thromboembolism) Prophylaxis or Prevention

St. Clair Hospital nurses and other staff on nursing unit 5F, a medical/surgical floor, are being feted by the Office of Healthcare Quality Improvement for their outstanding performance in VTE prophylaxis or prevention.

VTE is a disease that includes Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). DVT is a condition in which a clot forms in a blood vessel - usually in the leg - due to inactivity. The risk grows measurably if the clot should break off and travel to a lung, resulting in a PE. To learn more about St. Clair Hospital's quality initiative involving VTE prophylaxis, click here.
